What is modal?

Modal is a manmade fabric that is a type of rayon. It’s a semi-synthetic cellulose fibre that’s made by spinning reconstituted cellulose derived from beech trees. Modal fibres are stronger and more stable than your usual rayon, and has a soft feel that’s not dissimilar to cotton. While you can produce modal fabric alone, it can also be combined with other fibres, like elastane and cotton. Some people may be allergic to modal fabrics, so if you’ve not worn a garment before, test it to see how your skin reacts to it.

What clothes are made from modal fibres?

Modal is a versatile fabric that can be used in various ways, so you’ll find it in a number of household items and modal clothing like pyjamas, towels, underwear, and also bedsheets and bathrobes.

  • Make sure you check the instructions on the garment’s fabric care label for further instructions.

How to iron and store modal fabrics?

If your garment is suitable for ironing, then use a pressing cloth, which can be purchased specifically or even just use a piece of white cotton fabric, when ironing your garment. Store your garments in a cool, dry place. Since modal is not prone to creasing, you can fold or hang the garment depending on the item.
