This is one of the most frustrating faults you may have with your washing machine, especially as washing machine doors almost never jam shut before the washing starts. No, they normally wait until they’ve finished washing your garments, and then they decide to stay closed. Although we understand it can be rather annoying, we have some tips and tricks on how to solve this washing machine problem in a DIY way. Read on and discover the main reasons for this fault and how you can unlock a washing machine.

Washing Machine Door Stuck

Reasons why your washing machine door might be stuck

These are the most common reasons for a stuck door:

  1. If the washing machine door won’t open, even when the water has been properly pumped out, it could be because of a faulty pressure switch or a blockage in the pressure system, as it could be trapping the air that's operating the door lock.

  2. For some machines, if the pressure switch doesn’t reset, it keeps the door lock energised. Turning off the machine at the mains should allow the door lock to cool down, and after a few minutes, you’ll be able to open the washing machine door.

  3. The interlocks can take some time to release at the end of the cycle, so be patient. The most common cause is water left in the machine. Try running a spin/drain cycle. If this fails, the machine can be drained by placing the washing machine drain hose lower than the drum (into a bucket or tray).

  4. The door interlock has simply jammed. Call an engineer.

  5. The door catch, handle, or some part of the door catch mechanism is broken and not opening the door.

Never ever use force!

Call a repairer to fix your machine and help you rescue the captured clothes, hopefully as quickly as possible. Then wash again with Ariel to get your great results back.

How to open the washing machine door mid-cycle

If you’ve left something in the pocket of your jeans and would like to take it out, simply press the Start/Pause button, or turn the dial to the ’Off’ position. This will make the washer drain the water, and after a few minutes, you’ll be able to open the door easily.
