how to save water with Ariel

Water is essential for cleaning our clothes and we all know how much laundry the average family creates! That's why Ariel has developed products that can help you to save water while still getting the brilliant cleaning results you and your family expect.

cut out the pre-wash with Ariel

Ariel dissolves quickly and completely, getting straight to the heart of the wash for a deep clean without having to prewash, even at 30 degrees. With its advanced stain seeking technology, nothing cleans better than Ariel without a pre-wash. If everyone in the UK stopped pre-washing we could save up to 15 litres for each wash. That's more than 6 billion litres of water – enough to fill about 6000 Olympic sized swimming pools! So you see, it really is the small changes that together make a big difference.

be more sustainable by saving water

A new report, commissioned by Ariel and Waterwise, the UK’s leading authority on water efficiency, has revealed that an overwhelming majority of us fail to recognise that water saving is a pressing environmental issue. Yet water efficiency in this country is increasingly important. Did you know that Britain has less available water than many other European countries? And you might be surprised to hear that the South of England has less available water per person than the Sudan and Syria.

Each person in the UK currently uses about 150 litres of water every day, a figure that has been rising by 1% a year since 1930. Our water supply is not sustainable in the long term so, If we continue at the current rate, demand for water will exceed the supply. As the demand for water grows, so does the pressure on our water resources. Our population is increasing, more houses are being built and climate change, coupled with longer, drier summers, means that we're using more water than we have available.

It's predicted that in just twenty years water stress will be a serious problem worldwide and the average supply of water is expected to drop by at least a third. That's why it's so important to think about water saving now – because small changes we make today will help us conserve our precious water supplies for the future.

Key findings

• One in four of us are still using the pre-wash setting on our washing machines – wasting more than 6 billion litres per year. If everyone stopped pre-washing we could save enough water to fill more than 6000 Olympic sized swimming pools.

• Half of us do not wash full loads. Yet if we added 2 extra garments to our loads collectively we would save 608 million litres in just one week.

• One in four people in Great Britain do not turn off the tap while brushing their teeth, wasting six litres every minute – in total, wasting 446 million litres a day.
