How to remove mildew from clothing and fabrics

Mildew is not only foul smelling, sometimes in rare cases it can also be dangerous. It’s a type of fungus that can not only grow around damp parts of your home, but can also get onto your fabrics. Because mildew stains are a hygiene concern, it’s important to fully remove mildew from fabric. So it’s important to wash garments where you’ve got mildew on clothes at the hottest temperature possible, since hot water gives you the best chance of killing the mould spores. Also, use a detergent, like Ariel, containing bleaching agents to fully remove mildew from clothes. Follow our Ariel stain solutions and tips for the best stain removal results.

Removing mildew stains

  • 1

    Remove excess

Run the garment under hot, running water to remove any excess mould stains from the fabric. The higher the water pressure, the easier it will be to remove any excess from the garment.

  • 2

    Create a soaking solution

Fill a bucket, sink or a bowl with warm water and add ½ a scoop of Ariel Original Washing Powder to create a soaking solution. Mix it well by hand and add your mildew stained garment and leave to soak for 1 hour, weighting the item down with a white towel to keep it totally submerged.

  • 3

    Remove excess

Run the garment under hot running water to remove the stain, like in step one, use high water pressure to help remove the excess.

  • 4

    Pre-treat

Pour the liquid detergent directly onto the stain.

  • 5

    Load

Place the garment into the wash with similar items.

  • 6

    Dose

Use your Ariel dosing device to measure the correct amount of powder detergent, and pour it into your washing machine’s dispenser drawer.

  • 7

    Wash

Wash on the highest temperature as indicated by the fabric care label.

  • 8

    Unload

When the wash cycle is over, remove the items and you’re ready to go.
