Laundry Tips For College Students

The importance of knowing how to do laundry

First of all, welcome to the ante-room of the world of adults! Starting college is your first step towards real independence, and how you fare during the next few years has a huge influence on your future. The importance of being prepared for the challenges life throws at you is one of the many things you’ll learn here. From sports to exams, college life can make you sweat through your clothes in a myriad ways, resulting in an unpleasant body odour and visible, smelly sweat stains.

That’s why mastering laundry early in your college days is such a crucial thing – who would want to make friends and work on projects with someone who’s enveloped in a cloud of stench all day long? Ariel’s latest innovation, Ariel Platinum PODS® + Febreze Odour Defence was developed with college students just like you in mind, delivering an outstanding cleaning, eliminating smells at their source, and leaving behind a lasting scent.

How to sort laundry

Sorting clothes according to fabric type and colour might seem confusing at first, but you will get the hang of it really soon, you’ll see!

  • Separate darks from lights and delicate fabrics (such as lingerie, pantyhose, washable silks) from more durable garments.

  • Wash heavier items, like towels, separately from lighter weight clothes to prevent abrasion and damage to finer fabrics.

  • When in doubt use cold water, especially for dark clothes to avoid shrinking, fading, and bleeding of dyes. Using cold water saves energy and resources too.

  • For heavily soiled whites or light colours however, warm or hot water may be your best bet

Get ready to rumble

Close zippers, hooks and snaps, and fasten any Velcro closures. Unbutton all buttons (button holes can tear in the washer). Empty pockets and turn them inside out. Make sure socks aren’t bunched up, and unroll cuffs on pants and shorts. Tie any sashes or bows to prevent tangling. Put delicate items, such as lingerie and fine knitwear, in a zippered mesh bag.

Pop in a pod

Premeasured, all-in-one detergents, like Ariel Platinum PODS® + Febreze Odour Defence save time and are super easy to use (no spillage, no schlepping). First and foremost, all you have to do is toss one in with the load, and voilà – no more stains, no more malodours! All you’ve got are beautifully clean clothes! For an added freshness to your more smell-prone garments (such as sportswear), consider using Lenor Unstoppables Active In-Wash Scent Booster, which allows for more scent to permeate into the fabric slowly over time, protecting you from unpleasant odours.

Establish a laundry routine

Washing clothes doesn’t have to be a monumental task. If you add laundry to your weekly to-do list, it’ll be much easier to keep the chore manageable. Try do your wash during off-peak hours (generally early in the morning and late at night) so you can get in and out quicker. Plus you might get some studying done while you wait—and then have more time to play later.
